Southeast Asian Martial Arts

What I teach

I teach an introductory curriculum to Indonesian Pencak Silat and Filipino Arnis.  I strongly encourage my students to expand their knowledge and travel to SouthEast Asia to learn from true masters of these arts.

I call my interpretation of these arts Appalachian Pencak Silat (APS) and Appalachian Arnis (AA) to distinguish them from other Silat styles in the U.S.. I do honor all of the founding styles (shown in separate section below) in everything I teach.

Silat and Arnis Origin Styles

Penca Cimande

Considered the Grandfather of West Javan Silat, Penca Cimande was created in the 18th Century by Abah Kahir. It is characterized by its commitment to the Ta'leq Cimande (guiding morals), bone hardening exercises, and its bone healing with the famed "balur" oil.

Maenpo Cikalong

Developed in the early 19th century by Raden Haji Ibrahim (Raden Jayaperbata).  This style focuses on the control of both your energy and your opponents energy.

Panglipur

Founded in 1909 by Abah Aleh, Panglipur is a formulated art composed of all the best principles from all the original West Javan styles (Cimande, Cikalong, Sera, Sahbandar, Kari, Madi and others)

Luzviminda Arnis

Created by the late Grandmaster Fred Lazo using the best aspects from his teachers' styles and the different regions of the Phillipines (LUZon, VIsayas, MINDAnao).

Community and Culture

It is extremely important to me that I honor the different cultures represented among these arts. It is also important to me to teach meaningful principles to the local community and to give back when I can.
